Grammar
Refl exive and Emphatic Pronouns
When -self is added to personal pronouns like my, your, him, her or it and -selves to our, your or them
we get compound personal pronouns. These can be used in two ways: refl exive and emphatic.
Look at the usage of the word ourselves in the following sentences.
1. We’ve to protect ourselves.
2. We’ve raised all the money to come here ourselves.
In the fi rst sentence, ourselves is used as the object of the verb. The action done by the subject of the
verb turns back or refl ects upon the subject. This is a refl exive pronoun. For example,
The child hid herself in the cupboard. Her friends hid themselves in other places.
In the second sentence, ourselves highlights or emphasizes the action of the subject. This is an
emphatic pronoun which is placed either immediately after the subject or at the end of the
sentence. For example,
The minister herself visited the victims of the earthquake. The victims showed her the camp
themselves.
