8 The Vet’s Greatest
Reward

Do you have a pet at home? How frequently do you take it to the vet ? Have you ever thought
of becoming a vet when you grow up?
A reward is something one gets for doing a good deed or service. What do you think is a
good reward for saving a life? Read this story to find out.
It was a cold December evening. The sun had set and the stars were beginning to
twinkle. Dr Herriot, the vet, was returning home.

As he approached his house, he heard a squeal of brakes. A car stopped and he saw
an arm waving out to him. Dr Herriot stopped and a young man jumped from the car

and ran towards him. In a breathless, panic-stricken voice he asked, ‘Are you the vet?’
‘Yes, I am,’ said Dr Herriot.
‘Oh, thank God!’ he whispered, ‘Please help us.’
