an Android operating system, iPhone apps are developed to work on iPhones which have an
iOS operating system. The Internet connection speed must be fast for better running of apps.
An app on Android phone can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and an app on an
iOS phone from the App Store.
Types of Apps
Let’s learn about diff erent types of apps.
Desktop Apps
Desktop apps are designed for desktop or laptops. Any desktop app needs to be installed in the
computer system in order to be used. Once it is installed, you can see it on the desktop as an
icon or on the Start menu. These apps run independently on the computer system. PowerPoint
and Word are some examples.
Web Apps
Web apps are browser-based apps and are stored on the remote server (machine at diff erent
locations). So these apps require Internet connection. A web app can be accessed on a webpage
and can be installed by creating a bookmark to a webpage. Google Maps is a web app.
Mobile Apps
Mobile apps are designed to run on a smartphone or a tablet. The mobiles have limited memory,
and hence the apps are designed accordingly.
Classifi cation of Mobile Apps
Let’s learn about mobile apps.
Native Apps
Native apps are developed keeping in mind the device specifi cations because each device
has diff erent specifi cations. Some native apps come pre-installed on a phone, and can also be
installed on the device by downloading from the Play Store or App Store. Some native apps
can run on the device without the use of the Internet. These apps have certain limitations. They
are expensive to develop and maintain.
Hybrid Apps
Hybrid app is a combination of both web app and native
app. It can be stored partly on the local device and partly Think and Discuss
on the remote server. These apps can be installed on the Find out and name some native
device by downloading from the Play Store or App Store. and hybrid apps.
The device should be connected to the Internet.
