2. Enter the formula = A1 & B1 in
‘cell C1’ and press the Enter key.
The result will be displayed in
                           ‘cell C1’. Step 2

                    Range

A range is a group of continuous cells which form the shape of a rectangle. A range can be as
small as single cell or as big as an entire worksheet. The range is specifi ed with the starting cell
address followed by the ending cell address, both separated by a colon (:). For example, B5 : F5
indicates a range starting from cell B5 and ending with cell F5.

                    Selecting a Range

Follow these steps to select a range.

Step 1 1. Click on the fi rst cell in the range.

                      2. Holding down the left mouse button,
drag it to the last cell.
                                                                                         Step 2

                    Types of Cell Referencing

The cell address that we use in the formula is called the cell reference.
Each cell has an address denoted by the column letter and row number. There are three types
of cell referencing in Excel. Let’s learn about them.

                    Relative Reference

In relative reference, the formula in the copied cell changes according to the change in the
position of the cell pointer. For example, if the formula in A3 is = A1 + A2 and you copy the
same formula to B3, then Excel automatically changes the cell address in the formula.
