Quick Recall
• Data is a representation of unorganised facts and fi gures.
• Information is the processed and organised data.
• All the data that we feed into a computer gets converted to a form that can be understood by
the computer. This form is called the machine code.
• A computer takes the input in two forms: ON which is represented by 1 and OFF which is
represented by 0.
• The data entered into a computer is stored in the form of bits and is measured in bytes.
• Byte is considered the smallest unit of memory.
• There are two types of memory in computers: primary memory and secondary memory.
• Internal memory is of two types: Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory (ROM).
• RAM is a read/write type of memory.
• ROM is read type of memory which can be read only and not written by the user/programmer.
• Hard Disk or Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is the most common magnetic, mass-storage device of
present-day microcomputers.
• Compact Disk (CD) is an optical storage media.
• DVDs are the higher capacity removable media for multimedia applications.
• Blu-ray Disk (BD) is an optical plastic disk of the same size as DVDs and CDs.
• Memory stick is a standard storage device for data transfer in small digital electronic products.
