Monitor
A monitor looks like a television screen and displays everything we do on a computer. It
is also called Visual Display Unit (VDU). There are three types of monitors.
• Cathode Ray Monitor (CRT Monitor): It is very heavy and big
in size. It occupies a lot of space. It is rarely in use now.
• Liquid Crystal Display Monitor (LCD Monitor): It is not
very big in size and is also not very heavy. It occupies
less space. It displays clearer pictures than a CRT
monitor.
• Light Emitting Diode Monitor (LED Monitor): It is
not big in size, not very heavy and occupies less
space. It displays clearer pictures than LCD and CRT
monitors.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the main part of a computer. It is the brain of a computer.
CPU is called the processing unit. All the processing work of a computer occurs here.
There are three main parts of a CPU: Memory Unit (MU), Control Unit (CU) and Arithmetic
and Logical Unit (ALU).
• Memory Unit (MU): We can store data and instructions to be
processed in this unit.
• Control Unit (CU): It controls and transfers the information from
one part of the CPU to another. It controls and manages the
working of diff erent parts of a computer.
