2 Human Body—The
Skeletal System
We know that diff erent organ systems work in KEY CONCEPTS
coordination to perform various activities of • Major bones and their functions
the human body. One such organ system is • Importance of bones
the skeletal system that works in coordination • Joints
• Muscles
with muscular system to bring about diff erent
• Care of bones, muscles and joints
body movements.
The skeletal system is a rigid framework skull
of bones that serves many important jawbone
functions. It provides support, shape
and strength to the body, and protects ribcage
the internal organs. Bones along with forelimbs
the attached muscles allow diff erent backbone
body movements like walking, running,
writing and holding. There are 206
bones in an adult human body. The
framework of all the bones together is
known as skeleton. hindlimbs
Let us now study about the structure,
functions and care of major bones, the
joints and the muscles.
Major Bones and Their Functions Human skeletal system
The major bones of the skeleton include skull, limbs (bones of arms and legs), backbone,
ribcage (chest bone) and jawbone.
Skull
The skull is the bony framework of the head. It covers and protects the brain. It also
provides shape to the face. The skull consists of a total of 22 bones. Of the 22 bones,
