                                                                                                     Group Activity

In groups of four or fi ve, make a working model of a pulley installed in a well.
                    You Need:

A tin can, a tin cutter (to be handled by an elder), two long sticks, an empty
thread spool, thread, a toy bucket
                    What to Do:
                    • Take the empty cold drink or any other tin can. Request an elder to
detach the top of the can with the tin cutter.

                    • Attach two sticks on the can as shown in the fi gure.
                    • Take the empty thread spool and wind a long string of thread on it.
Keep both the ends of the string free.
                    • Take another stick and put it through the spool in such a way that the
spool is able to move easily.
                    • Now tie this stick to the other two sticks.

                    • Take a toy bucket and tie it to one end of the thread.
Your well is now ready to be used. Add some water in the can. Lower the bucket in it and
pull the thread from the other end. See what happens.
