Types of energy

There are diff erent forms of energy. Let’s discuss some of them.

                    Mechanical energy

The energy possessed by an object due to its position
or motion is called mechanical energy. It is of two

                    types—potential energy and kinetic energy.

The energy possessed by a body due to its position is
called potential energy. It is the stored energy of an

object. For example, a stone kept on top of a building
has potential energy, if it falls the potential energy is

                    converted into kinetic energy.

The energy possessed by a body due to its motion is known as kinetic energy. For
example, a moving ball, fl owing water, etc. have kinetic energy.

                                                          Heat energy

The energy which is responsible for the sensation of
heat is known as heat energy. We get heat energy from

the sun and also by burning various fuels like wood
and coal. This energy is useful in cooking, running
                                                          steam engine and generating electricity.

                       ACTIVITY TIME
To show that heat is a form of energy

                        You Need:

A matchbox, a candle, a piece of paper, a pair of tongs
                        What to Do:

                        • Place the candle on a table.

                        • Light the candle using the matchstick.
                        • Now using the tongs, hold the paper above the fl ame of the candle.
The paper burns. Thus, we can say that heat is a form of energy due to which the paper gets

                        burnt.
