PREFACE

It is a common observation that a large section of students consider Mathematics to be a dull
and difficult subject. It remains one of the most talked about subjects. In fact, the whole student
community is polarised either due to the fascination for Mathematics or the fear it brings to
their young minds. It is our endeavour to impress on the fact that a large number of students
suffer because of lack of intellectually honest instructional material which can link the subject
            with real-life situations.

Start Up Mathematics is a sincere effort to fulfill the requirements and meet the expectations
of thousands of students and teachers. The books are carefully structured in their content and
concepts. A large number of quality problems with varying levels of difficulty will make them
useful to a majority of students. The simple style of writing and the evolution of concepts is done
keeping in mind the National Curriculum Framework developed by the NCERT which elaborates
on the insights of learning without burdening the students. The habit of rote learning should give
way to learning in an environment in which students learn by experimenting in the laboratory,
playing mathematical games and solving quizzes and puzzles. The students should learn to justify,
            reason, analyse and then evaluate.

The books contain critical appraisal of various concepts. They are strictly based on the syllabus
prescribed by the NCERT. They contain recapitulation exercises after every concept, and summary
and review exercises at the end of each chapter to consolidate concepts learnt in the chapter.
Review exercises include multiple choice questions (MCQs), Solve Mentally containing fill in
the blanks, true or false and answer in one word or a line and let’s evaluate section. Thought
provoking questions are covered in Thinking Skills and questions to develop interpersonal skills
are given in Values and Life Skills. A section consisting of selected questions from NCERT textbook
and Exemplar Problems is given at the end of each chapter. Laboratory Activities as per the CBSE
guidelines are integrated within the books as Maths Lab Activities. Neat and authentic figures
            are supplemented wherever necessary.
Start Up Mathematics series also includes a separate technology section on ‘Linking Mathematics
with ICT’ and sample test papers for round the year assessments.

It is our earnest belief that regular practice will not only inculcate interest in students, but lay
a strong foundation at an early stage. A large number of solved examples, problems and group
activities given in the books will help teachers and students alike.
A feedback from students and teachers for further improvement of the books will be highly
            appreciated.
