2. The year-wise growth of a school is shown below.
Year 2002–03 2003–04 2004–05 2005–06 2006–07 2007–08
Number of students 110 170 185 245 360 540
Draw a bar graph to represent the above data.
3. Literacy rate of various states of India in a particular year is given below:
State Madhya Pradesh Bihar Mizoram Uttar Pradesh Kerala
Literacy rate per 600 650 810 700 990
1,000
Represent this data using a bar graph and show which state has the highest literacy rate.
4. A random survey was done on the difficulty level of a competitive examination. 100
candidates were asked to choose one of the following responses: Difficult, Average, Easy,
No comments.
Response Difficult Average Easy No comments
No. of candidates 30 25 40 5
Draw a bar graph to represent the above data.
GROUP ACTIVITY
Conduct a survey and prepare a list of months in which each student of your class is born,
i.e., the month in which their birthday falls. Represent this information in a table using
tally marks. Construct a pictograph and a bar graph for the same.
At a Glance
1. Pieces of information in the form of numerical figures is called data.
2. Data can be organized using tally marks in order to analyze and obtain information quickly.
3. Primary data is first hand information collected by the person himself while secondary
data is collected by someone else.
4. If information or data is represented by pictures or objects, it is known as a pictograph.
5. In a bar diagram or bar graph, bars of uniform width are drawn horizontally or vertically
with equal spacing between them. The height of the bar represents the numerical value of
the data.
6. Choosing a scale is very important while drawing a bar graph and pictograph.
