P. 180
(c) How many more bullock carts does village B have as compared to village D?
(d) What is the total number of bullock carts in all the five villages?
Solution: (a) Village ‘B’ with 9 bullock carts has the maximum number.
(b) Village ‘D’ with 4 bullock carts has the minimum number.
(c) Village ‘B’ has 5, (i.e., 9 – 4) more bullock carts than village ‘D’.
(d) Total bullock carts in all the five villages are 31 (i.e., 7 + 9 + 5 + 4 + 6).
Example 4: The sale of fans on the first 6 days of a week is shown below:
Days Number of fans = 2 Fans
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Saturday
What can we conclude from the above pictograph?
Solution: We can conclude the following from the pictograph:
(a) Sale of fans on Monday = 5 × 2 = 10
(b) Sale of fans on Tuesday = 8 × 2 = 16
(c) Sale of fans on Wednesday = 5 × 2 = 10
(d) Sale of fans on Thursday = 4 × 2 = 8
(e) Sale of fans on Friday = 7 × 2 = 14
(f) Sale of fans on Saturday = 5 × 2 = 10
(g) Sale of fans during the week = 68
Pictorial Representation of Data
We have learnt that in a pictograph, numbers are represented using pictures or symbols.
But sometimes a symbol like which is used in the above example is difficult to
draw. Symbols which are not only simple to draw but can easily represent the sub parts of
the whole are preferred. Let’s see, how can we overcome such a situation with the help of
an example. Let’s assume that if the symbol represents 5 students, then represents
4 students, represents 3 students, represents 2 students and represents 1 student only.
