P. 162
Now, let’s represent 0.15 diagrammatically.
15
The fraction represented by the shaded part in Fig. (b) is or fifteen hundredths,
100
i.e., 0.15. Similarly, if we divide a unit into 1,000 equal parts then each part
1
represents one-thousandths of the whole, i.e., 1,000 of the whole. In decimal
notations, we write it as 0.001. Fig. (b)
Decimal Places
The decimal places is the number of digits on the right of the decimal point. For example, 3.84
has 2 decimal places.
Like Decimals
The decimals having the same number of decimal places are called like decimals. For example,
3.7, 52.3 and 118.1 are like decimals.
Unlike Decimals
The decimals having different number of decimal places are called unlike decimals. For example,
32.8, 64.51 and 8.004 are unlike decimals.
In some cases, unlike decimals like 0.3, 0.30, 0.300 are equivalent decimals as adding or removing zeros
at the extreme right of the decimals does not change its value.
Example 11: Complete the table with the help of these boxes and use decimals to write the number.
Assume one big square consisting of hundred small squares represents one.
