Word Problems on Multiplication and Division

Example 15: Hariti bought a set of 12 notebooks for her new class. If the cost of one
notebook is ` 15.50, how much did Hariti pay for the whole set?
Solution: Cost of one notebook = ` 15.50

                            Cost of 12 notebooks = ` 15.50 × 12 = ` 186.00

                                  1 1
                                  1 5 5 0

                            × 1 2
                                  3 1 0 0
                            + 1 5 5 0 0
                                1 8 6 0 0

Thus, Hariti paid ` 186.00 for a set of 12 notebooks.
Example 16: Maanav goes to the market to buy one dozen eggs. If the cost of one egg is
` 2.50, how much money does Maanav need to buy eggs?

            Solution: 1 dozen eggs = 12 eggs

                            Cost of 1 egg = ` 2.50
                            Cost of 12 eggs = ` 2.50 × 12 = ` 30.00

                                    1
                                    2 5 0

                             × 1 2

                                  1 5 0 0
                              + 2 5 0 0
                                  3 0 0 0

Thus, Maanav needs ` 30.00 for 12 eggs.

Example 17: To reach Agra from Delhi, a train covers 132.72 km in 4 hours. How much
distance does it cover in 1 hour?

            Solution: Distance covered in 4 hours = 132.72 km 3 3 . 1 8
                            Distance covered in 1 hour = 132.72 ÷ 4 = 33.18 km 4 1 3 2 . 7 2
                                                                                                   – 1 2 ↓
Thus, the distance covered by the train in 1 hour is 33.18 km. 1 2

                                                                                                     – 1 2
                                                                                                          0 7
                                                                                                          – 4
                                                                                                            3 2
                                                                                                          – 3 2
                                                                                                             0
