A simple and quick way to subtract numbers from 100, 1000, 10000 and so on.
Subtract the last digit from 10 and each remaining digit from 9.
Example 1: Find 100 – 86.
Solution: 100 – 8 6
↓ ↓
subtract subtract
from 9 from 10
↓ ↓
1 4
So, 100 – 86 = 14.
Example 2: Find 1000 – 258.
Solution: 1000 – 2 5 8
↓ ↓ ↓
subtract subtract
from 9 from 10
↓ ↓ ↓
7 4 2
So, 1000 – 258 = 742.
Example 3: Find 10000 – 793. Note: The number to be
subtracted should have
Solution: 10000 – 0 7 9 3 number of digits equal
↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ to the number of zeros
in the minuend. If the
subtract from subtract number of digits is less,
9 from 10 then add zeros before the
↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ given number and then
9 2 0 7 subtract.
So, 10000 – 793 = 9207.
Try these: 1000 – 777, 10000 – 4532, 100 – 73, 10000 – 579
A simple way to multiply
(a) Two numbers close to 10
See how much less are the numbers from 10. Subtract one number’s deficiency from
the other number to get the first digit (tens digit) of the answer. Multiply the two
deficiencies to get the units digit.
