Comparison of Numbers
Different number of digits Same number of digits
The number with more digits is always greater. When the number of digits is same, start
comparing from the leftmost digit, i.e., the digit
at the thousands place.
Look at the given examples.
1. Compare 2685 and 798.
2685 > 798
(4 digits) (3 digits)
2. Compare 2982 and 3105.
2 9 8 2 3 1 0 5
2 at the thousands place 3 at the thousands place
Since 2 < 3, 2982 < 3105.
3. Compare 4861 and 4539.
4 8 6 1 4 5 3 9
The digit at the thousands place is same in both the numbers. Thus, compare
the digits at the hundreds place.
4 8 6 1 4 5 3 9
8 at the hundreds place 5 at the hundreds place
Since 8 > 5, 4861 > 4539.
4. Compare 5861 and 5875.
5 8 6 1 5 8 7 5
The digits at the thousands and hundreds place are same in both the numbers.
