Example 10: Divide 230 kg mangoes among three friends X, Y and Z in the ratio : : .
2 3 8
Solution: Converting the given ratio into its simplest form.
1 1 1 1 × 24 : 1 × 24 : 1 × 24 (LCM of 2, 3, 8 = 24)
: : =
2 3 8 2 3 8
= 12 : 8 : 3
12 12
Share of X = × 230 kg = × 230 kg = 120 kg
12 83++ 23
8 8
Share of Y = × 230 kg = × 230 kg = 80 kg
12 83++ 23
3 3
Share of Z = 12 83++ × 230 kg = 23 × 230 kg = 30 kg
Example 11: In what ratio should we decrease 1,500 to get 800?
Final quantity 800 8
Solution: Multiplying ratio = = =
Original quantity 1,500 15
∴ Original quantity : Final quantity = 15 : 8
Thus, if 1,500 is decreased in the ratio 15 : 8, we will get 800.
