Like Decimals Try These

The decimal numbers having the same number of decimal
places are called like decimals. For example, 13.26, 5.04 and 1. Write the place value of 8 in 7.083.
                                                                                      2. Write 216.014 in the place value table.
12.6 are like decimals. 3. Which of the following are like
                                                                                        decimals?
                    Unlike Decimals 0.38, 11.5, 3.33, 0.100, 2.05
The decimal numbers having different number of decimals places are called unlike decimals.
For example, 14.5, 24.20 and 10.312 are unlike decimals.

                    Conversion of Fractions into Decimals

Conversion of decimal fractions into decimals
For proper and improper fractions, count the number of zeros in the denominator. Then in the numerator,
put the decimal point as many places from the right as the number of zeros in the denominator. For
mixed fractions, write the whole part as it is and for the fractional part, follow the same process as
                    for proper fraction.

Example 1: Convert the following decimal fractions into decimals.

                                  (a) 17 (b) 2,591 (c) 125 9
                                      1000 100 1000
                                        17
                    Solution: (a) = 0.017 ( Denominator has 3 zeros. Therefore, decimal point
1000 will be 3 places from right)
                                      2,591
                                  (b) = 25.91 ( Denominator has 2 zeros)
                                       100

                                  (c) 125 9 = 125.009 ( Denominator of fractional part has 3 zeros)
                                           1000

Conversion of other fractions into decimals
Convert the given fraction into an equivalent decimal fraction by Maths Info
multiplying its numerator and denominator by a suitable number and
then into decimals. We can also change fractions
                                                                                              into decimals by following
Example 2: Convert the following fractions into decimals. division.
                                       3 21

                                      25 500

                    Solution: (a) 3 = 3 × 4 (Multiplying numerator and denominator by 4)
                                      25 25 × 4

                                          = 12 = 0.12
                                            100
                                          21 21 × 2
                                  (b) 18 = 18 (Multiplying numerator and denominator of
                                         500 500 × 2 fractional part by 2)

                                              = 18 42 = 18.042

                    Conversion of Decimals into Fractions
Write the given decimal number without decimal point as the numerator. Then, write 1 in the denominator
followed by as many zeros as the number of digits after the decimal point.
