Mixed Problems of Addition and Subtraction

To solve a problem that contains addition as well as subtraction, we follow the given steps.
              • First add the numbers that do not have a minus ( – ) sign in front of them and then
add the numbers that have a minus sign separately.

              • Subtract the smaller sum from the bigger sum.

            Example 12: Solve 524 – 73 – 149 + 208.
Solution: Step 1: Add the numbers that do not have a minus sign H T O
                                                                                                          1
                                    in front of them. 5 2 4
                                    524 + 208 = 732 + 2 0 8

                                                                                                     7 3 2

                                                                                                     H T O
Step 2: Add the numbers that have a minus sign in 1 1
                                    front of them. 1 4 9

                                    149 + 73 = 222 + 7 3
                                                                                                     2 2 2

Step 3: Subtract the sum obtained in step 2 from the H T O
                                    sum obtained in step 1. 7 3 2

                                    732 – 222 = 510 – 2 2 2
                          So, 524 – 73 – 149 + 208 = 510. 5 1 0

Example 13: Ravi had 675 marbles. He gave 290 marbles to his friend Arun and purchased
175 more marbles. How many marbles does Ravi have now?

Solution: Number of marbles Ravi had = 675 5 17
                                                                                                    6 7 5
                          Number of marbles he gave to Arun = 290 – 2 9 0

                          Number of marbles left with Ravi = 675 – 290 = 385 3 8 5

Number of marbles purchased by Ravi = 175 1 1
                                                                                                    3 8 5
                          Total number of marbles with Ravi now = 385 + 175 = 560 + 1 7 5

                                                                                                    5 6 0
So, Ravi has 560 marbles now.

                                                                                                                 37
