                    Expressions Using Amiss
Read this sentence from the story.

As he neared the house, he realized that something was amiss.

When we say that something is amiss, we mean that something is out of place or isn’t quite right.
However, the word amiss can be used to mean diff erent things. For example,

Rigzin hoped the villagers wouldn’t take it amiss when he shouted at them not to kill the leopard.
Taking more precautions wouldn’t go amiss, if the cattle are to be protected from leopard attacks.

In the fi rst sentence, to take something amiss means to be off ended by something that is said. In
the second sentence, something wouldn’t go amiss refers to that particular thing being welcome or
                    useful.

                       required.

the dance competition,’ Jatin said to Rati.
                        2. The house was eerily dark and silent even during the day. All the neighbours thought
