Ar cles
Look at the following sentences.
Joji had an ink stick and a stone.
Joji was the boy who drew cats.
The words highlighted in the examples above are called articles. They are used before nouns.
The articles a and an are used with singular countable nouns. They are known as indefinite
articles.
We use a before words beginning with a consonant sound.
a car a dog a house a university a European
The article an is used before words that begin with a vowel sound.
an apple an honest man an ice cream an hour an umbrella
The is called the definite article. The is used to refer to a particular person or thing.
She is the person who saved my life.
The earth revolves around the sun.
In both these sentences we are referring to particular things, so we use the.
We also use the before a noun when we have spoken about it earlier.
I bought a cupcake. I gave the cupcake to my sister.
No article is used before proper nouns.
Bhopal is a big city.
The Bhopal is a big city.
However, the is used before the names of rivers, oceans, mountain ranges, monuments and
some books.
