Actions Performed by an Antivirus

Actions performed by an antivirus are as follows.

• Repair: In this case, the antivirus does not delete the infected file, but removes the virus
from the infected files.

• Delete: In this case, the infected file is deleted along with the virus. This is done because
the virus cannot be separated from the data fi le.

Importance of Regular Updates

Installing an antivirus software alone does not ensure 100% protection. A virus database needs
to be updated frequently to identify new virus programs. Therefore, we need to continuously
update our antivirus program. Updates for the antivirus programs are available from their
websites.

Using an Antivirus Software

Now let’s learn to use an antivirus software.
Here, we will be using the Avast software. You

fi rst need to buy or download the antivirus
program for your system.

Follow these steps to use an antivirus software.
1. Click on the Start button.

2. Select the Avast Free Antivirus program
from the list. An ‘Avast Free Antivirus’

program window will appear.
3. Click on the RUN SMART SCAN button. The scanning process will start. If a virus is found,
the antivirus program will inform the user and will either delete or isolate it so that it
cannot aff ect the system.
