A prefix is an element placed at the beginning of a word to slightly change its meaning.
non-existent, ex-president, re-elect, illegal, impatient
A suffix is an element placed at the end of a word to form another word.
nation – national suffocate – suffocation
Prefixes and suffixes play an important part in word formation.
Prefixes
Study how new words are formed from related words.
unfinished is the opposite of finished, formed by adding the prefix un-
irrepressible is something that cannot be repressed or controlled
intrepid means fearless, brave; from trepidation – feeling of fear
embroiled means involved in a broil or trouble
Prefixes such as en-, em- and over- can be used to form verbs.
enable, empower, overcome

D3. Forming new words with prefixes
Divide the class into groups of four. Discuss and come up with a minimum of four words which
form their related words or antonyms with the prefixes given below. The group members will
discuss among themselves and add as many words as possible. The group that gets the
maximum number of correct related words wins.

Suffixes
There are many suffixes such as -ment, -ly, -able/-ible, -acy, -ous, -ation, -ful, -ity, -ance and -ence
which are used to make nouns, adverbs, adjectives and their opposites.

beautiful, generosity, attendance, occurrence
