Example 28: Find the value of:
(a) 8.756 – 7.28 (b) 18.5 – 6.79 (c) 11.6 – 7.847
Solution: (a) 8.756 (b) 18.50 (c) 11.600
– 7.280 – 6.79 – 7.847
1.476 11.71 3.753
Example 29: Subtract:
(a) ` 19.25 from ` 20.75 (b) 202.54 m from 350 m
(c) 3.051 km from 8.206 km (d) 0.156 kg from 17.86 kg
Solution: (a) ` 20.75 (b) 350.00 m
– ` 19.25 – 202.54 m
` 1.50 147.46 m
(c) 8.206 km (d) 17.860 kg
– 3.051 km – 0.156 kg
5.155 km 17.704 kg
Example 30: Tanvi bought a book for ` 43.65. She gave ` 50 to the shopkeeper. How much money
did she get back from the shopkeeper?
Solution: Money given to the shopkeeper = ` 50.00 ` 50.00
– ` 43.65
Cost of the book = ` 43.65 ` 6.35
Money she gets back = ` 6.35
Example 31: Chandni has 30 m 5 cm long cloth. She cut 4 m 50 cm length of cloth from this to
make a suit. How much cloth is left with her?
5
Solution: Total cloth Chandni has = 30 m 5 cm = 30 m + 100 m = 30.05 m 30.05 m
50 – 4.50 m
Cloth cut for suit = 4 m 50 cm = 4 m + m = 4.50 m
100 25.55 m
Cloth left with her = 30.05 m – 4.50 m = 25.55 m
Example 32: John went to the market with ` 500. He ate a pizza costing ` 112.80. He purchased
a book for ` 83.25 and on his way back took a rickshaw for which he paid ` 8. Find
the amount left with him.
` 112.80
Solution: Cost of pizza = ` 112.80
` 83.25
Cost of book = ` 83.25 + ` 8.00
` 204.05
Money paid for rickshaw = ` 8.00
Total cost = ` 204.05 ` 500.00
∴ Money left with John = ` 500.00 – ` 204.05 = ` 295.95 – ` 204.05
` 295.95
