            Solution: (a) (b) (c)

                          (d) (e) (f)

Example 3: The fraction representing the shaded part of the figures is mentioned along with.
                          Identify the error, if any.

                                            1 1 2
                          (a) (b) (c)
                                            2 4 4

                                                                    1
Solution: (a) The shaded part actually represents .
                                                                    2
                                                                   1
                          (b) The shaded part does not represent , since the vertical line is not in the middle.
                                                                   4
                                                                    2
                          (c) The shaded part does not represent as the outer rings have more area.
                                                                    4
Example 4: What fraction of an hour is 45 minutes?
Solution: We know, 1 hour = 60 minutes.
                                                                                    3
                          ∴ Fraction representing 45 minutes of an hour = 45 = .
                                                                              60 4
Example 5: Arya has got two sandwiches, one made of vegetable and other of jam for lunch.
His friends Abhimanyu and Vivek forgot to bring their lunch. Arya decided to share
his sandwiches with them so that all of them get an equal share of each sandwich.
                          (a) How can Arya divide his sandwiches so that each person has an equal share?

                          (b) What part of the sandwiches will each boy receive? (NCERT)
Solution: (a) Arya can divide each sandwich into 3 equal parts.

                          (b) Each sandwich is divided into 3 parts or 2 sandwiches are divided into 6 parts.
                                                                                   2 1
Therefore, each boy will get 2 parts out of 6, i.e., or of the whole.
                                                                                   6 3

                                                                                                            125
