Patterns
Patterns are arrangements of different or same shapes, designs, letters or numbers in a
particular sequence according to a rule.
This is a design carved on a piece of wood. It can be dipped in different colours
and stamped on the cloth to make a design. Similar designs can be arranged
in different ways to get a pattern.
Numbers also follow a pattern. Look at the given example to understand how
to continue a number pattern.
Example 6: Find the next number in the pattern.
(a) 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, _____ (b) 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, _____
Solution: (a) The rule in this pattern is to add 6 to the number before.
Desired number = number before + 6 = 54 + 6 = 60
(b) The rule in this pattern is to add 50 to the number before.
Desired number = 300 + 50 = 350
Example 7: Find the next number in the pattern and write the rule.
(a) 95, 90, 85, 80, 75, _____
(b) 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, _____
(c) 480, 240, 120, 60, 30, _____
Solution: (a) The rule is to subtract 5. Hence, the answer is 70.
(b) The rule is to multiply by 2. Hence, the answer is 128.
(c) The rule is to divide by 2. Hence the answer is 15.
