Addition of Two 4-Digit Numbers (without carry over)
To add 4-digit numbers, first add the ones, then the tens, the hundreds and finally
the thousands.
Example 1: Add 4302 and 2683.
Solution:
Th H T O Th H T O
4 3 0 2 Step 1: Add the 4 3 0 2 Step 2: Add the
+ 2 6 8 3 ones. + 2 6 8 3 tens.
2 + 3 = 5 0 + 8 = 8
5 8 5
Th H T O Th H T O
4 3 0 2 Step 3: Add the 4 3 0 2 Step 4: Add the
+ 2 6 8 3 hundreds. + 2 6 8 3 thousands.
3 + 6 = 9 4 + 2 = 6
9 8 5 6 9 8 5
So, 4302 + 2683 = 6985. Remember
Similarly, you can add 5-digit and bigger The numbers which are added
numbers. are called addends. For example,
in 12 + 10 = 22, 12 and 10 are
the addends and 22 is the sum.
EXERCISE 3.1

(d) (e) (f)
6 7 1 2 4 9 2 7 5 4 5 4
