            Word Problems

Example 14: Tina opened an account in a bank with ` 250. Later she put ` 175.65 more
in her account. How much money did she put in her account in all?

            Solution: Money put on opening the account = ` 250 ` p

Money put later into the account = ` 175.65 1
                             Total money Tina put in her account = ` 250 + ` 175.65 2 5 0 0 0

                                                                          = ` 425.65 + 1 7 5 6 5

                             Answer: Tina put ` 425.65 in her account. 4 2 5 6 5

            Example 15: Vikas bought a notebook for ` 18.75 and a pencil box for ` 31.50. He
gave ` 75 to the shopkeeper. How much money should he get back?

            Solution: Money spent on the notebook = ` 18.75 ` p

                             Money spent on the pencil box = ` 31.50 1 1
                                                                                                     1 8 7 5
                             Total money spent = ` 18.75 + ` 31.50
                                                                                                + 3 1 5 0
                                                     = ` 50.25
                                                                                                     5 0 2 5
Money given to the shopkeeper = ` 75

                             Money Vikas should get back = ` 75.00 – ` 50.25 ` p
                                                                                                               9
                                                                 = ` 24.75
                                                                                                          4 10 10
                             Answer: Vikas should get ` 24.75 back. 7 5 0 0

                                                                                                – 5 0 2 5

                                                                                                     2 4 7 5

Example 16: The cost of 1 dress is ` 325. How much will 5 dresses cost?

            Solution: Cost of 1 dress = ` 325 1 2
                                                                                                        ` 3 2 5
                             Cost of 5 dresses = ` 325 × 5 = ` 1625 × 5

                             Answer: 5 dresses will cost ` 1625. ` 1 6 2 5
