Multiplication

Multiplication means adding the same number repeatedly.

Count the number of chimpanzees in each group.

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8

2 is repeatedly added 4 times.

This can also be written as

4 times 2 = 8

or 4 × 2 = 8

The symbol ‘×’ denotes multiplication.

Look at some more examples:

1. 3 + 3 + 3 = 9

3 times 3 = 9

or 3 × 3 = 9

2. 4 + 4 + 4 = 12

3 times 4 = 12

or 3 × 4 = 12
