GROUP ACTIVITY
To understand the concept of addition and subtraction for bigger numbers using
tens and ones
Things We Need: Ice cream sticks, rubber bands, white sheets of paper and a pencil
How To Do:
1. Form groups of 10 children in each group.
2. Give 10 ice cream sticks and 1 rubber band to each child of the group.
3. Give different addition problems to each group. For example, ask one
group to add 34 and 25.
4. Tell the group to form bundles of ten sticks to represent tens and single
sticks to represent ones. For example, they will form 3 bundles to represent
3 tens and 4 sticks to represent 4 ones to form 34.
+ = 34
Similarly, they will form 25 using the sticks.
5. Then, they will put and count tens together and ones together to get the
answer.
+ = 5 tens + = 9 ones
3 tens 2 tens 4 ones 5 ones
So, the answer will be 59.
6. Similarly, each group has to find the answer to the problem sum given to
them.
7. In the next round, give problems based on subtraction to solve.
8. Give marks to each group according to the performance. The group with
the maximum marks will be the winner.
