Johann Ritter (1776–1810) confirmed the composition of water to be two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen in 1800. This composition was confirmed when the amount of hydrogen and oxygen produced by the electrolysis of water were measured by Ritter. Water’s composition was discovered in 1781 by Henry Cavendish.
