7. Electricity and Magnetism

Alessandro Volta

Alessandro Volta (1745 - 1827) was a physicist, chemist and a pioneer of electrical science. He is most famous for his invention of the electric battery. He discovered the first practical method of generating electricity. He produced electrical current by alternating discs of zinc and copper with pieces of cardboard soaked in brine (highly concentrated solution of common salt) between the metals. Alessandro Volta’s voltaicpile was the first ‘wet cell battery’ that produced a reliable, steady current of electricity.
